The Solar Cannon,
An interesting contraption that was popular in the 18th century, the solar cannon was used to signal 12 o’clock noon. When loaded and set up properly, a magnifying glass would concentrate a beam of sunlight onto a fuse or charge of gunpowder located at the touch hole, discharging the cannon, and signalling that it was 12 o’clock noon.
